  1. I have been out of the market for a few years. I bought a gun that I knew i wouldnt have any trouble with.... the 870, and Im still using it. But Im a big boy now, all grown up with a bigger budget.

Is this versa max reliable? Does it realy cycle 3.5 inchers without jaming like every other remington? Or, should i break down and just buy a benelli with everyone else that doesnt believe in keeping their money in America?

  2. Just google Versamax problems. Junk. I know of people that have had problems with theirs. And a lot of horror stories on the net. Choose wisely:dv
  3. I've been watching the Versamax closely, although I've yet to have a chance to fire one. There is a 90+ page thread at shotgunworld.com that has a LOT of info about it.

It appears the gun cycles just about everything reliably, with the possible exception of 2-3/4" baby mags. Perceived recoil is almost universally reported as extremely light. The vast majority of reports I have seen have been very positive.

There have been a few issues. The forearm cap had a tendency to work loose, but Remington has redesigned it to solve that problem. The firing pin retaining pin was reported to work loose by a few people if not re-installed properly, so there has been a redesign for that, too. Finally, some people are reporting crooked vent ribs and/or barrels that were not straight. It seems that Remington has been very good at getting all of these items replaced quickly. I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to purchase a Versamax right now (I'm just hoping they come out with a wood-stocked 3" version :pra ).

  4. It will out shoot and out last all of those B gun POS.:dv
  5. you are so wrong, it must hurt. :(
  6. I kinda sympathize with the Italiano B gun owners, and understand their reasons for berating the Versamaxes attributes, it must leave a bitter taste when the American new comer toppled the jamomatics off their throne just when they thought the old dog was all but dead bar the twitching, now up fighting and with a unique bunch of new to the industry feature like working reliable low recoil sufficient heft and feel of a real magnum shotgun not an upland special cammoed up and fitted with an antique mechanism and hang the recoil just live with it sales banter like at least one of the Italian B gun teams. And the other just flat refuses to repair or accept fault with any of their plain Jane offerings and offer the world record bad customer care award for the humpteenth year flat in a row.
Remington are there in the arena with a good product building a good reputation back up with AMERICAN STEEL and good customer care, for me that has to be a huge pluss and when you add to this the cutting edge gas system design it proves Remington are out of the doldrums and it will take more than a 90 page thread on a gripe ridden internet forum to becalm this vessel.

I just reached my two year anniversary with my Versamax. On January 30th I was shooting some 1615 fps #2 winchester expert 3.5" shells and my third shot the recoil was just terrible. The brass on the shell had a crack in it and I noticed my extractor was snapped in two and my bolt handle had almost dislodged, and the sling swivel in the magazine cap had broken. The bolt handle popped right back in and I tried to find to find an extractor for it through brownells, midway, etc. but nothing. The Remington factory had them, but then I remembered in my paperwork that Remington has a platinum service guarantee with a 7 day factory turn-around. Now my gun was one of the first ones released with the FIXED stamped "V" trigger group. As some mentioned before there were brazing heat marks on the inside of the barrel where the rib was connected. My chokes fit very tight in the gun, but never seized up. The vent rib mid-way down had a slight raise in it from the factory when I bought it, but nothing that anyone else but me would notice. My gun was not cosmetically perfect from the factory and I accepted that it was Remington?s first go at a new gun?.but make no mistake it shoots. It shoots everything from my reloaded ? ounce target loads to 2 ? ounce turkey loads without the need to tape up my middle finger?..those of you who shoot heavy payloads or many light loads in intertia driven guns know what I?m talking about.
I called Remington customer service. I waited on the phone for 2 minutes. Talked to a nice guy named Paul and he emailed me a UPS return label. Packaged the gun up in its carrying case it came with, put it in the original factory box wrapped in brown paper and sent it off. The gun was signed for on Saturday the 2nd of Feb. I received an email at the end of the day on Monday Feb 4th stating that the firearm was disassembled, cleaned and inspected and waiting to be repaired. 4 o?clock on Tuesday the 5th I received an email stating that the gun had been repaired and shipped. Got the gun on Friday Feb 8th, and had to pay $13 COD fee for the cleaning (the gun was atrocious when I sent it to them). I opened to inspect the gun and immediately noticed that there was a NEW barrel / piston assembly in there with no bent spot in the rib, no brazing marks on the inside of the barrel, and the choke screwed in and out very easily there was a new green hi-viz tube in the sight, and my old orange sight tube was taped up in an envelope with a note on it. There was a new extractor, new bolt & updated trigger group. I also dremeled out the dimples in the mag tube so I could put a mag extension on my old gun. Remington put a new mag tube on it and the updated magazine cap. The gun was professionally cleaned, but the receiver was still mine because some of the scratches I put in it were still there. There was a form on the inside that said it was disassembled, cleaned, repaired and test fired with the updated parts group. I immediately took it to the shooting range and put two boxes of 1 ounce #8?s through it and it never hiccup?d. I will take it snow goose hunting again in two weeks, so I will need to dremel out the mag tube and put an o-ring under the mag cap to hold it on, but other than that I really couldn?t be happier with the gun or Remington customer service. I have no doubt it will serve me well for many many more thousands of rounds.
  8. Most owners are reporting that the Versamax is pretty darn reliable, but in order for Remington to produce their first new successful autoloader model in decades they copied Benelli's argo system. Just look at the trigger guard and stock, also copied from Benelli.... just sayin'.
